Mezzanine cost per square foot: what the trade publishes, and what changes it

Short answer
Published trade figures from 2025 put structural steel mezzanines in a range of roughly $40 to more than $250 per square foot depending on load rating, decking, and complexity, with one dealer reporting installed costs of $50 to $175 per square foot and an average around $85. Basic storage platforms sit at the low end, heavy-duty and custom platforms at the high end. Installation adds about 30 to 50 percent of the material cost and freight roughly 10 percent in those sources. Those are attributed ranges for planning; the accurate number comes from the factory once footprint, clear height, load, deck, stairs, and gates are known.
What the trade publishes
Two 2025 dealer publications give a consistent picture. Both are dated; treat them as planning ranges, and ask us for the sources if you want to read them.

What moves the number
Every one of these is a question on the builder, which is why the builder exists.
- Load rating: 125 psf storage is the base; 150 to 250 psf adds steel
- Column spacing: wider spans need heavier beams
- Decking: bar grating, resin board, and diamond plate price differently
- Stairs, landings, gates, and handrail length
- Clear height: taller columns and longer stairs
- Installation state: seismic and snow considerations, and whether stamped drawings are required
- Site: slab condition, obstructions, and whether a crew can work during production

Use the mezzanine builder to enter the footprint, clear heights, load, deck, stairs, and gate, and it produces the configuration and an estimated bill of material the factory can price. Or send photos and a sketch of the area and we fill it in. The quote comes back as line items with the platform, decking, stairs, gates, drawings, freight, and installation each on their own line, so you can see what each choice costs and phase it if you need to.
Questions buyers ask
- What is the cheapest mezzanine?
- A rectangular storage platform at 125 psf with tight column spacing, resin board deck, one stair, and self-installation. Everything you add moves it up the range.
- Does the quote include installation?
- Installation is quoted as its own line, by factory-certified crews or left to your team with the drawings. Published sources put it at roughly 30 to 50 percent of the material cost.
- Are stamped drawings included?
- Non-sealed drawings are included. PE-stamped drawings for the installation state are a separate line, quoted when the permit office requires them.
