About steel mezzanines
A structural mezzanine is a free-standing steel platform that adds a second working level inside an existing building without touching the building's structure. Columns land on your slab, beams and joists carry the deck, and stairs, gates, and handrail complete the code-required package. Typical uses are storage over shipping, office over production, pick modules, and equipment platforms.
Design starts with four numbers: overall length and width, clear height underneath, uniform live load in pounds per square foot, and the maximum column spacing your floor layout can tolerate. Standard storage platforms are engineered to 125 psf; equipment and high-density storage often call for 150 to 250 psf. Deck choice sets the finish: bar grating for airflow and sprinkler pass-through, resin board or plywood for a smooth walking surface, and diamond plate for wash-down or high-abuse areas.
